Out picking pockets at the Atlantic Antic

Well, actually, no, we don't pick pockets (that's what the Beastie Boys used to do), we just love to visit the Atlantic Antic every year - the biggest street fair in New York City, conveniently located near our house.

While we love to stroll the car-free Atlantic Avenue, which is filled with food, artist and local shop stalls all selling their colorful wares, we actually go for one reason and one reason only - the New York Transit Museum's vintage bus festival that is part of the street fair! What better way to spend a sunny afternoon than checking out a couple dozen perfectly preserved NYC busses from the transit museum's extensive fleet? You'd better believe that we check out each and every one of them, inside and out!

And this year, there was a special treat - in addition to the busses, the transit museum rolled out their fleet of "special vehicles", like this "tunnel wrecker", which in the past was used to retrieve stalled cars from inside the underwater tunnels that lead into Manhattan from New Jersey. The tunnel wrecker was a specially designed vehicle, very short but strong with a tight turning radius, so that it could more easily move around in the tunnels and pull cars out in either direction - and we got to climb all over it and even pretend-drive it!

Besides the busses and other vehicles, there's also a special arts and crafts area set up, where we got to make our own busses.

Can't wait for next year's antics - just better keep an eye on what's in our pockets, lest someone picks them!
